Sponsored by the National Press Foundation, this award offers a $2,500 prize and citation for best analysis, commentary or reporting on energy, natural resources and the environment to a US-based journalist. Deadline is Mar 8, 2024.

The Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University is accepting nominations until Jan 20, 2024, for work encouraging fairness in news coverage by American journalists and news organizations. Winner receives $10,000; second and third receive $1,000.

Jan 19 is the extended deadline for the next round of SEJ's Fund for Environmental Journalism story grants. Journalism projects must cover the clean energy transition in the U.S. Grants up to $5000; stipends up to $2500 for nonprofit news staffers or freelancers.

The Associated Press and Google offer a national scholarship program intended to foster digital and new media skills in student journalists. The Online News Association, the world’s largest membership organization of digital journalists, administers the program. Applicants must be U.S. citizens at least 18 years old. The Evert Clark/Seth Payne Award recognizes outstanding reporting and writing in any field of science by science writers age 30 or younger. Winner will receive $1,000 and expenses to attend the annual ScienceWriters meeting. Deadline: June 30 annually.

SWCC honors outstanding contributions to Canadian science writing with cash prizes of $1,000 in two categories (children and general public), as well as the $500 Paradigm Prize for Underrepresented Perspectives in Science Writing, selected from the shortlist of finalists. Deadline: Dec 8, 2023.

The Indigenous Journalists Association (IJA) annually recognizes excellence in covering Indian Country by Indigenous and non-Indigenous journalists across the U.S. and Canada, including students. Deadline: Mar 22, 2024.

NABJ recognizes journalism that best covers the Black experience or addresses issues affecting the worldwide Black community. Many categories include a specialty for environment/health/medical issues. Deadline: Feb 15, 2024.

The Livingston Awards, for excellence by professionals under the age of 35, judge print, broadcast and online entries against one another, a practice of increasing interest as technology blurs traditional distinctions between rival branches of the profession. Three $10,000 prizes. Deadline is Feb 1, 2024.
