"Refuge Hunting Expansion Triggers Clash"

"A new Fish and Wildlife Service proposal to expand hunting opportunities on national wildlife refuges has flushed into the open a heated debate over the role of sport shooting on public lands.

Critics blasted the agency's proposal unveiled last Wednesday to increase the number of units in the National Wildlife Refuge System that allow hunting to 399 and the number where fishing is permitted to 331. Some refuges would be open to hunting for the first time.

"These are supposed to be refuges, not easy target hunting grounds," a commenter identified as Nathan Head stated in a note posted Friday."
