SEJ News: SEJournal Adds Two New Editors

Two new co-editors have joined the SEJ Publications team, while we say goodbye to two important past editorial team members.

Data and multimedia journalist Geoff McGhee (pictured, right) will serve as co-editor of EJ InSight, working with fellow co-editor Andrew Cullen, to expand coverage of the visual journalism column to include a new focus on data storytelling. 

McGhee is currently associate editor of the Bill Lane Center for the American West’s original journalism blog, “& the West,” and at the University of Colorado, he is the data and infographics consultant for The Water Desk, a grant-funded project at the University’s Center for Environmental Journalism. 

He previously spent nine years at Stanford University at the nexus of academic research and public engagement, and also served as a lecturer in multimedia environmental journalism. 

McGhee has long experience in the journalism world, including at The New York Times, Le Monde, ABCNews.com and National Geographic, and works with such clients as Schema Design, The Committee to Protect Journalists, Oxford University Press and others.

In 2009-10, he spent a Knight Fellowship year at Stanford researching data analysis and visualization, and received his master's degree in journalism from Columbia University.

Early-career freelancer Julie Zenderoudi (pictured, left) will serve as co-editor of our Freelance Files column, where, along with fellow co-editor Elyse Hauser, she will contribute her unique perspective to building a life and business as an independent journalist. 

Zenderoudi is a Canadian multimedia journalist based in Brooklyn, who specializes in the intersection of climate and health, the environmental impacts of fast fashion and all things science. Previously, she worked as a journalist and associate producer at Canada’s public broadcaster, CBC News, and her work has appeared in Slate, Offrange, Prism and The Brooklyn Paper. 

She is currently completing her master’s degree at NYU’s Science, Health, and Environmental Reporting Program, where she was awarded the Felsten-Fishman Fellowship, and works as an editorial intern at The New Lede, covering environment and health stories across the U.S. 

She holds a B.A. in communication studies and creative writing from Concordia University in Montreal and studied television and film production at Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario.

Both McGhee and Zenderoudi will also join the SEJ’s Editorial Advisory Board, which helps maintain the editorial integrity and independence of SEJ publications by consulting regularly with publication editors on editorial content for SEJ publications. 

SEJournal also bids farewell and offers deep thanks to two departing editors. Bob Wyss, a professor emeritus of journalism from the University of Connecticut, an author of four books and a former newspaper reporter and editor, has been smartly co-editing our EJ Academy column for the better part of a decade, and thoughtfully writing for SEJournal for the better part of two. We wish him well in his second retirement. And Marianne Messina has been contributing to Freelance Files — and to planning for SEJ Publications — for the last two years. We appreciate her insights and encouragement, and hope her puppy parenting offers infinite rewards.
