DEADLINE: Bill Lane Center for the American West Media Fellowship

Stanford University’s Bill Lane Center for the American West has supported journalism about the West and its environment for more than a decade. We’re soliciting a new round of applications for our media fellowship, which provides a $5,000 stipend for three months’ work.

As of September 12, 2023, we will accept applications for an award to be made in mid-November. Deadline for applications is October 9, 2023. Applicants should include a description of the project, a resume, three clips, and evidence that established publishers or distributors will seriously consider publishing or distributing the work. The new media fellow is responsible for securing distribution of the work. Incorporating a plan to work with Stanford-based experts is not a requirement but will ensure an application gets extra attention The story should be published within six months of receiving the award, or by May 15, 2024.

Our criteria: The work should examine a crucial aspect of the West’s land, air and water. It should focus on the region’s people, its history, and the impact of the forces powering its economy. The work itself could be presented using one or any combination of the following: print or online articles, book chapters, photography or photo essays, informational graphics, podcasts, video journalism, documentary films, fact-based graphic novels or graphic documentaries.
