Student Newsroom Essentials

This training will demonstrate tools that instructors can introduce in the classroom to help student journalists research and report more effectively. It covers advanced Google search operators to help target online research; niche search engines and databases for reporting beats; and tools for identifying misinformation and verifying information.

Tackling Misinformation
Thursday, October 5, 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. EST
Learn best practices and tools used to verify information across social media and the web. This session will look at Google and open-source tools for inspecting images, videos, and accounts, and explore reliable sources tracking misinformation and disinformation globally.

Pinpoint for Investigations
Thursday, October 19, 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. EST
This session will demonstrate Pinpoint, an AI tool from Google’s Journalist Studio that allows users to search and analyze large collections of files, and transcribe audio and video. Pinpoint’s newest features allow users to extract and export structured data from files.

Advanced Search
Thursday, November 2, 1:00 - 2:00 pm EST
This training demonstrates advanced search and investigative techniques.
It covers how to effectively use Google search operators, tips for searching people and content across social media platforms, and explores niche search engines and databases for different reporting beats.

Election Tools for Newsrooms
Thursday, November 16, 1:00 - 2:00 pm EST
This training offers ideas and tools for creating engaging election coverage.
It covers open source tools to help verify claims, how to make maps and graphics with Flourish and Google Maps, and tips for using Google Trends during elections.

YouTube for News
Thursday, November 30, 1:00 - 2:00 pm EST
This session provides an overview of the YouTube for News program, covers best practices and formats for creating and repurposing content, and looks at examples of successful YouTube news channels from Canada and beyond.
