Bioethics Bootcamp: Finding the Must-Read Angle for Science and Medical Stories

Event Date:
March 30, 2012

A unique one-day workshop, Bioethics Bootcamp: Finding the Must-Read Angle for Science and Medical Stories, is funded by a  grant from the National Association of Science Writers.

Today's science writers have to understand and communicate advances in science and technology. These topics are not only complex and important — they frequently raise potential or immediate ethical concerns for individuals, institutions, families, and society.  For an in-depth look at the intricate, expanding bioethics spectrum, join us for this very special program,  developed jointly by Science Writers in New York (SWINY), The Hastings Center and  City University of New York (CUNY) Graduate School of Journalism.

Bioethics Bootcamp has been designed specifically for science reporters and editors, other professional science writers, public information officers, journalism students, and concerned physicians and scientists.  Members of NASW and SWINY receive a substantial discount.

WHEN: Friday, March 30, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

WHERE: CUNY Graduate School of Journalism, 219 West 40th Street, New York City

WHAT: A series of panel discussions and question-answer sessions will feature leading journalists, bioethicists, scholars and scientists exploring specific, sensitive issues, ranging from conflicts of interest and genetics to human life from beginning to end and emerging biotechnology. In the closing panel, editors from scientific, business, and consumer media will share their criteria and considerations for health or medical topics with a bioethical aspect. Attendees and panelists are invited to mingle from 4:30 onward at a wine and cheese reception.  (Full details — including a list of journalists and bioethicists on the panels — are at http://bootcamp.swiny.org)

Participation is limited to 60 journalists. Limited discount available until March 1. Register now and save! Each participant will receive the Hastings Center Bioethics Briefing Book for Journalists and Policymakers, a $35 value.
