Independent Receptions are one of many highlights of SEJ's annual conference. Receptions give organizations the opportunity to showcase their mission and services to SEJ attendees and to possibly expand on conference topics. Attendees are encouraged to visit the receptions in the California and Grand Ballrooms throughout Thursday evening from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m., where they can gain insights into relevant issues and enjoy a relaxed atmosphere of food and beverage.

New York Times best-selling author and Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) staffer Miriam Horn traveled to America’s heartland and down the Mississippi River to meet conservative ranchers, farmers and fishermen who are embracing cutting-edge practices to protect the natural resources that sustain their livelihoods.
In her latest book, "Rancher, Farmer, Fisherman," Horn challenges pervasive and powerful myths about American and environmental values. "Rancher, Farmer, Fisherman" has been made into a documentary that will appear in theaters and on the Discovery Channel in 2017.
Stop by to meet Horn, who will be joined by Central Valley farmers, ranchers and conservationists that have worked with EDF to advance sustainable agriculture practices on local California farms and ranches. Local beer, wine and nibbles will be served.

Dr. Yaver is the inaugural 2014 Rosalind Franklin awardee for more than 20 years of extraordinary scientific contributions related to bacteria and fungi for the field of industrial biotechnology.

The wildly popular Policy Resolution Group at Bracewell LLP reception has a long-standing tradition of fun and fellowship. Also known as “Frank’s Place,” the reception has been an institution at SEJ for more than a decade, bringing together top industry experts and media minds.
Attendees will be treated to tasty hors d’oeuvres, a full bar and — new this year — a DJ to keep the good times going. Co-sponsors for the 2016 reception include the American Cleaning Institute, BrightSource, DTE Energy, the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA), Southern Company, Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association, Valero, Waste Management.
Walton Family Foundation: Fresh & Salty Conversation
Stop by the Walton Family Foundation reception for a fun, informative and tasty mix of fresh and salt water stories. Walton works on two of the most important environmental issues of the day — the conservation of fresh water and the health of the oceans. Staff and partners will be on hand to talk about (1) the ongoing challenges of managing the Colorado River (including the president’s recent announcement on the Salton Sea) and (2) the incredible turnaround of commercial fishing along the Pacific Coast. You will even be able to sample some sustainable West Coast rock fish.
Please join The Wilderness Society for a reception filled with libations, lights and laughter. No, really — solar lights! After spending the day touring the Golden State it will be great to return to stimulating conversation while enjoying delectable dishes and a carving station. We will be highlighting some of our big conservation, energy and climate victories of the year and hope to toast a new year in environmental news coverage. Also don’t miss our wine tasting at 6:00 p.m. We will be sampling California wines, various cheeses, meats and jams.
