Dengue Cases In Florida Continued To Climb After Emergency Declared

"The state’s reported cases have nearly doubled since three counties declared states of emergency, with Hillsborough County at the center of the outbreak."

"About a month after three Florida counties declared states of emergency over what officials described as a “wildly unusual” dengue outbreak, infections of the mosquito-borne disease have continued to climb.

Since September, Florida’s total reported dengue cases have almost doubled from 392 to 721, according to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The outbreak remains concentrated in Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, where cases have climbed from 177 to 352.

New cases have also been reported in Orange, Broward and Miami-Dade counties.

Ira Longini, a biostatistician and infectious-disease modeler at the University of Florida, said he’s not surprised by dengue’s continued spread."
