"With fact-backed journalism under such incredible attacks, journalists need to support each other, to lift up remarkable work and to ensure the next generation of environmental reporters gets the help they need."

— Ken Ward Jr., Investigative Journalist and 2018 MacArthur "Genius" Grant Award Winner

Ken Ward Jr.December 9, 2019 — I first learned about the Society of Environmental Journalists in the late 1980s. As a reporter at The Daily Athenaeum, West Virginia University’s independent student newspaper, I yearned to write about my home state’s environmental problems, from the coal industry to chemical plants.

For nearly 30 years, as I’ve covered the environmental beat for The Charleston Gazette, now the Charleston Gazette-Mail, SEJ has been a teacher and a friend.

SEJ members have shared valuable sources, explained complicated scientific concepts and given me huge support during tough times – and been great cheerleaders when things were going well.

With fact-backed journalism under such incredible attacks, journalists need to support each other, to lift up remarkable work and to ensure the next generation of environmental reporters gets the help they need.

You can help SEJ remain strong, and by doing so, ensure that environmental journalism remains strong. Make a donation today.
