Complicating the Narrative With Amanda Ripley

Event Date:
June 2, 2021

What if journalists covered controversial issues differently?

Join The Narwhal’s editor-in-chief Emma Gilchrist in conversation with Amanda Ripley, an investigative journalist for The Atlantic and author of a new book, "High Conflict: Why We Get Trapped and How We Get Out".

In 2018, Ripley wrote a blockbuster article for the Solutions Journalism Network on how journalists would cover issues differently if they paid attention to how humans actually behave when they are polarized and suspicious. By revealing how conflict mediation techniques can be applied in journalism, Ripley has helped light a path forward for hundreds of journalists, including our team at The Narwhal.

During this one-hour session, we’ll explore what the ‘conflict trap’ is and how to get unstuck, share key things to ask to help lead the way out of conflict and answer reader questions. We'll also dig into how The Narwhal’s unique approach to storytelling came about, and why this method is so important when it comes to reporting on the climate and extinction crises.

Live Zoom event at 3 p.m. PT/6 p.m. ET on June 2. Register here.
