The Adirondack Explorer, a 22-year-old nonprofit newsmagazine covering New York's 6-million-acre Adirondack Park, is looking for a first-rate editor-in-chief to oversee coverage of challenges and opportunities facing this globally important region. This is a chance to cover global issues on a local landscape that ranks as the East’s greatest expanse of wildlands, covering a mix of public lands, designated wilderness areas, private timber holdings and revered lakes.
The successful candidate should have a news background and at least five years’ experience as an editor who works across platforms and story formats. Must be adept at writing, editing and comfortable managing a small staff of reporters along with freelance reporters, columnists, artists and photographers. The workload is split between daily work for the Adirondack Explorer website and more in-depth investigations and explainers for a print magazine that publishes six times a year.
Candidates should have a keen interest in environmental and conservation issues, outdoor recreation and the unique social, political and economic realities of the Adirondack Park.
Must have hands-on experience with digital platforms and social media.
